Abstract

This paper focus on the lack of altruism. Helping others is a traditional virtue of the China nation. It is vital important for us to be an altruistic person. Nowadays,the lack of altruism has been a serious problem for people all over our community,which makes people ignore others who are in difficult situation. In consequence, some people are so indifferent that they see others die around them without any rescue. Our group tries to address it by introducing innovative solutions to increase the level of altruism among people all over the world. We shared the experiences and thoughts with the students and visitors in Harvard, learnt relevant information on the internet, and made group discussions about our own ideas. We designed three different solutions for different kinds of people who are interest in the subject. Advocating people to help each other in social media, making education to guide people, and being a model to augment cognition and influencing others through actions. This paper elaborates the solutions and discusses their feasibility and sustainability.

Chapter1: Introduction

1.1Main problem and methods

Our group focuses on the lack of altruism in our daily life, and tries to find the solutions. In order to achieve this goal, we interviewed several strangers at Harvard University.

1.2Significance of solving the lack of altruism

Couple weeks ago, a piece of news caught everyone’s attention. A little girl was rolled over twice by cars, but passersby were not willing to help her for 7 minutes. The tragedy makes us rethink profoundly. Why did the passersby take no immediate action? What would I have done if I was involved in the accident? Furthermore, we are thinking about what we can do to help others in other situations. According to some studies, we have found that in America, 50 philanthropists contributed almost 100 billion yuan in 2017. However, in China only 130 billion was donated. Therefore, being an altruist is the basic of many problems. For example, if you are sympathetic about others, you will think of the difficulties they meet in their shoes. To sum up, being empathetic and helping each other is necessary for all of us. We can be getting related with people’s help and can improve together. So we want to solve this problem to make our world be a better place.

1.3Different perspectives

To draw a conclusion of all the information we gained, fear of liability is the main reason for those people who are egoist. As the saying goes, “The greater responsibility, the greater the risk”. According to our interview, most of them thought they should do something to help the little kid who lost her life during the accident. One of the students admitted that if he was on the scene, he might take no action because he would wonder that probably others would do the help. Maybe it is true for so many people on the scene. This is the other reason for not being an altruist. However, almost everyone in our interview has already performed some form of charity. For instance, donations to the church, volunteering to be a teacher, being a guide to show people around the college, giving away their money to the people in need. Also, everyone is agreed with us that we should take measures to solve this problem and let the world be full of warmth. In the end, they pointed out different solutions to the issue. Major of the interviews thought education was the best way to augment people’s cognition, and to make everyone help others spontaneously. One of the interviews regarded the high-technology for some social media is an excellent way to increase people’s awareness of helping others, which would make people take actions definitely.

1.4Summarize of the three solutions

We came up with three solutions by summarizing the information that we obtained from the interview. Firstly, advocating people to help each other through social media which can awake people’s compassion. Secondly, guiding people and augmenting their cognition through education may also be beneficial. Finally, influencing others by taking actions, being a model is a favorable way to make positive impact. By taking these steps, we sincerely hope it can help people to increase the awareness of altruism and also raise the number of altruists in our world.

Chapter 2: Solution 1 for Social Media:

Advocating people to help each other in social media

2.1 Tentative Project Assumption

Social media is popular among people;

Social Media Corporations will change;

Celebrities could provide help.

2.2 Solution Overview

First, use social media platforms to send articles about altruism. For example, a couple of years ago, a little girl was rolled over twice by cars. However, she did not receive assistance until18 people had passed by and 7 minutes. Social media should criticize this kind of behavior and advocate for altruism. However, it should not be sent as an article like "Everyone should become an altruist". Teaching people with cases can make them more moved or make them angry about the lack of altruism. It is similar to education, teachers should make their class more interesting or attractive. Then students are eager to study. If teachers just stand in front and read the textbook, nobody would feel interested to study.

Meanwhile, we should advocate altruism in famous TV station and television programs, such as Hunan TV or the Spring festival gala. On the other hand, we can also invite celebrities to advocate for greater altruism.

2.3 Difficulties

The corporations and celebrities may not provide help because they have no interest in it. And social media may just advocate altruism bluntly and without story or reason. Furthermore, people may do not care about it.

2.4 Sustainability Analysis

It is true that the process of advocating people to become more altruistic still has a long way to go. However, we do not expect our proposed solutions cost enormous resources. In fact, it will only take a little time of editors and celebrities. So that more people will take part in the advocacy, which makes this solution more sustainable.

2.5 Feasibility Analysis

We will strive for the support of social media corporations and celebrities in order to achieve success since the whole solution relies on them. That will make this solution more feasible. However, these solutions can still work without celebrities’ help which will take more time to reach our intended expectations.

Chapter 3: Solution 2 for Education:

Allowing Education to Guide People and

Augmenting Cognition

3.1 Tentative project assumption

From our point of view, education can show the importance of principle to people clearly. People may learn the significance of the theory through education, which will raise the moral standers as well. What’s more, schools hope to strengthen the education in these topics nowadays, especially to teach the students be altruists. With the help of education at schools, people will be less egoist as they interact with others outside of the classroom.

3.2 Solution overview

Strengthen the education in school, multicultural courses will let them know more about the world. The impact of education is subtle and does change a lot, especially the education for kids. Children who under 12 have not formed their own values. The education from both parents and teachers are vital important for them. As the children were guided to become altruists, they will try to take more actions to care and help others. In addition, people will think more about others if they know a lot. Once they know that people are suffering, they have more of a chance to help them. For example, a frog in a well is not willing to help other frogs from the eagle, because the frog probably does not know what an eagle is! In other hands, people who are knowledgeable and wealthy are more willing to help others because of their high-quality daily life. Take the example of Bill Gates, he may have enjoyed every luxury thing all around the world and he will think about the lives of others finally.

3.3 Difficulties

Although education is a brilliant method to solve this problem, there are still some difficulties when facing it. Firstly, the teacher must have been an altruist who has done professional research about the altruism. If teachers do not truly understand it, the students will definitely distrust them and may have their disagreements. Secondly, the way to teach them is also a difficulty that we might face. The method is the most important part during this term, particularly for these theories. As we all known, learning the academic theory may not require a high emphasis about learning method. As they are tangible, we can directly study the knowledge ourselves. On the contrary, the theory of how to become an altruist is absolutely different from an academic one. It is really hard to understand for the students and the people in society.

3.4 Sustainability analysis

Helping others is a traditional virtue of the China nation. The education of being an altruist will affect the kids ceaselessly and unconsciously from birth. The solution is sustainable because it will be accompanied by the sustainable education to make more people become altruistic.

3.5 Feasibility analysis

To educate people from different perspectives is feasible. For being an altruist is a responsibility for everyone. As we all known, it is right to help those people in need around you. Therefore, if we can work out the methods about how to convince people to accept your opinion, the solution of education will be successful.

Chapter 4: Solution 3 for People around us:

Using actions to influence others, be a model

4.1 Tentative Project Assumption

From our perspectives, just preaching and telling people what to do is impractical to achieve the goal of teaching others to be altruistic. Instead, we should become altruistic people first, then we can influence others by our actions. People cannot do this activity only by themselves, they should make others know the influence they made.

4.2 Solution Overview

During our preliminary investigation, we found that many people are unwilling to listen the preaches. So, we think that there should be more models in our daily life and influence the people by actions. For instance, parents should first become altruistic person themselves, then they are able to guide their children. Furthermore, people who are devoted to charity should make presentations to let the masses know about what they did and why. So that people could be inspired by the idea they have shown and may decide to devote their life to charity too. We heard a story from my teacher, he told us the reason why he become a volunteer to teach in primary school is he listened to a lecture by his teacher before. His teacher told him about the contribution he did about helping the poor people. He was inspired by that and wanted to become a person just like his teacher.

4.3 Difficulties

In spite of our solution is feasible, there are still some difficulties that we are facing. In our solutions, we hope that there were real models in daily life. But someone should become a model first. It might be difficult to cultivate someone’s altruistic behavior. Furthermore, some people’s character is just unconscious about others and it is hard to change it.

4.4 Sustainability Analysis

We make people altruist, and they will make their kids altruist. It is a virtuous circulation. Firstly, we guide some people to become altruist, and then those people will gradually influence others.

4.5 Feasibility Analysis

Although it is a long way, it is feasible. We cannot do it by ourselves, we will let people know the influence we had made. While introducing altruism to others at school, make sure you have some convincible data. Tell a story or do an activity to accurately explain the challenges that different abled individuals may experience. (e.g. Invite athletes with disabilities come to our school to introduce the difficult experiences and the help they got from the society.)

Chapter 5: Future Development

5.1: Timeline

If what we planned had all been realized, we are supposed to see that

5.2: Vision of the Future

We are looking forward to see that the number of altruistic people can be authentically increased, either by using our humble solutions or in using any other methods. We are just like a big family and there should be more sympathy between people. Creating a better atmosphere for ourselves.

Chapter 6: Conclusion

The social problem we found is the lack of altruism. Through the innovation project, we designed three different solutions towards different king of people.

lSolution 1: Use social media to spread our thoughts and activities;

lSolution 2: Educate students about altruism;

lSolution 3: The models use their action to influence others.

And we sincerely hope what we want can be carried out, and increased the amount of altruistic people. Let us take together to become more empathic and care about each other to make the world a better place.

The following is the result of our interview.
